Sitting in MSP
Written on Aug 20 2010

I’m currently sitting in MSP at gate E12 waiting to get on my flight to Chicago. I’m hungry and sleepy and someone in close proximity reeks of mothballs.

I’m excited to go home for Saturday though because I’m grabbing my car and driving to Milwaukee for the day to attend Irish Fest and see all my Northern Ireland Young Ambassador buddies! I also get to see my favorite 19-year-old brother who was MIA during my previous 18-hour flyby at home between Europe and school.

I’m all moved in at school into my swanky 70′s on campus apartment. My closet doors are all bright orange. I’m sure you’re jealous.

Starting Sunday I have two straight weeks of Resident Advisor training, so don’t expect to hear much from me. I’ll probably be curled up in the fetal position somewhere wishing I was careless in Europe again.

Welp, I’m boarding. Talk to you all again soon :]

The ultimate Canadian superhero
Written on Aug 11 2010

Perhaps Captain Canada performs the “Canada Slam” whilst hunting in the Canadian woodlands…

[The following is from this website]

CAPTAIN CANADA

Real Name:
Daniel Eaton

Identity/Class: Human, technology user

Occupation: Unemployed

Affiliations: Captain Newfoundland,
Captain Freedom, Japan,
Mademoiselle, Veena,
Nightworld

Enemies: Remlin,
Sho-Gun, Mr.Big

Known Relatives: Unnamed parents

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Montreal, Canada

First Appearance: Captain Newfoundland # 1 (1981)

Powers/Abilities: Most of Captain Canada’s powers stem from his costume,
which he figures is controlled either by his brainwaves or by magic (his
mentor, Captain Newfoundland, has told him that both are correct). The armour
can fly, even into outer space, and survive in the interstellar void. It
can create a force field, and has inbuilt lasers and computer. It can turn
him invisible or generate hologram doubles of him. It can turn immaterial,
letting him go through walls. Without the armour Daniel still has some telepathic
abilities, which he learned from Captain Newfoundland.

History: Daniel Eaton was chosen by Captain Newfoundland to become
Captain Canada. The alien being gave him a suit of armour controlled by his
mind, and then tutored him to become the defender of his homeland. To ensure
that the new hero learned to use his powers responsibly, he only allowed
the hero to access the suit’s powers over time, unlocking new abilities each
time Daniel proved himself worthy. Daniel rescued a kidnapped model to gain
his first ability, the power of flight.

After being tutored by several cosmic beings, Captain Canada’s first real
test came when the Super-Mafia unleashed a giant robot, Sho-Gun, on Montreal,
the city he was living in at the time. The robot was sent to kidnap Queen
Elizabeth of Great Britain and her son Prince Charles, but thanks to the
hero’s intervention, it failed. After a prolonged battle, Captain Canada
was triumphant and destroyed his opponent.

Comments: Created by Geoffrey Scott and Danny Bulanadi.

A spin-off from Scott’s newpaper stip, Captain Newfoundland (Sunday Herald,
1979 to 1980), Captain Canada has proven his most successful character, appearing
in comics, graphic novels and even animated cartoons.

CLARIFICATIONS: Not to be confused with

Captain Canada, partner of Beaver Boy

New opportunities on the horizon:

House Rule #1: No counting down how many days we have left in Ireland.  I’ve managed to convince myself that I’ve only been in Europe for about a week.  The thought of returning to school, work, and three straight weeks of job training starting literally the day after I return to the United States is depressing. (BUT I’m really excited to see all of my friends and family again)

To avoid breaking the house rule, let’s just say I planned to be abroad for ten weeks, and last week was week nine.

Fear not!  I have plenty to look forward to!  In January I will be venturing to Turkey for my “Perceiving Islam in Turkey” class.

I’ll be travelling to Istabul, Mardin, Urfa, Gaziantep, Adana, Cappadocia, Konya, Pamukkale, Izmir, and Bursa.

According to the course description, this is what I’ll be doing:

“While traveling across Turkey, visiting sites essential to the development of Islam, sharing meals and conversations with Turkish Muslims, and reading about Islam from both insiders’ and outsiders’ perspectives, we become familiar with the basic beliefs and practices of Islam and its influence in Turkey including worship, family life, politics, modernity, gender relations, relations with other faiths, and intellectual and artistic traditions.”

Cool, no?

Some of you are probably wondering why I’m taking this course.  My university requires three theological courses, and I needed to finish up my 300-level this year.  I knew I wanted to take a course on something I have little to no knowledge about, and I wanted to take something that would immerse me in a completely new culture (I’m sure this is shocking).  So, I picked this, and I couldn’t be happier :]

CANADA SLAM!
Written on Aug 10 2010

While in Ireland, I’ve had the opportunity to learn a lot about ancient Candadian traditions, such as their moose hunting practices.  The most common of these is called the “Canada Slam” as demonstrated below by my beloved Canadian housemate Cassidy:

This particular hunting technique is both dangerous and effective.

Please do not try this at home.

This is what we do while you’re all at the pub
Written on Aug 9 2010

This is what my housemates and I do at home while everyone else is at the pub:

It’s called a Milling Frolic.

After dinner last night, my housemates and I sat around trying to recall any American or Canadian folk songs (we’re all American or Canadian).  This resulted in some renditions of “She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain” and a strange Canadian song about beavers.  Those in turn resulted in a makeshift Milling Frolic.

At a glance, this seems like some strange Canadian ritual.  Once you get to know the practice though, you quickly realize that it’s a nice break from all the moose hunting, syrup collecting, and Canada Slamming.

MOUSTACHE FROG ON YOU!!!
Written on Aug 8 2010

No, that is not an insult.  While people sing Sean-Nós songs in the Conamara area, listeners often shout things at the singers to give them the motivation to continue.  These words of encouragement include:

Dia leat – God be with you
Up sleamhcán – Up sladdy (sea vegetable)
Up scrathachaí – Up sods of turf
Croch suas é – Lift it up
Up an baile s’againne – Up out village

And my personal favorite:
Muisteais frog ort! – Moustache frog on you!

I asked a couple locals why people shout about frogs and moustaches, and apparently there isn’t really a reason.  It’s just what they do.  Haha  I think the Irish may just have a thing for animals with moustaches, because when I was on the Aran Islands, I found this moustashed horse:

An update on the last two and a half weeks of my life:
Written on Aug 3 2010

I arrived in Galway City on… July 15th, I believe.  For those of you who don’t know, I’m in Conamara right now doing an Irish Language immersion course.

I happened to be in the same hostel room as a good chunk of kids who would be in my course.  We meandered, bonded, all around become best friends overnight.

I did the beginner level of this course last year, so this year I requested to stay with the same bean a’ tí (host mom) I had last year.  When I walked up to the front door she flung it open and said, “Welcome home!”  It was so nice after a month of wandering without any familiar faces.

I’ve been studying pretty hard (I even brought my notebook and notecards into the pub and studied there), but I feel like things sunk in more easily last year.

I made a return to several places I journeyed to with this program last year:  Ros MucKylemore AbbeyClifden, and Inis Meáin (where I climbed on and around Dún Chonchúir for the second year in a row…YES!).

I’ll probably write more about my program and what we’re doing.

In the meantime… ENJOY SOME PICTURES!!!
